Going by what President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce,
Tim Anosike said on Friday, the Niger bridge is on the verge of collapse. He revealed
that the bridge might collapse much earlier than forecasted by its designers,
as it is being overburdened by the daily traffic gridlocks and had to carry
tens of trucks with goods of thousands tonnage each day.
He said that the commencement of the second Niger Bridge was
overdue considering the increase in vehicular movement on the bridge in the
past five years.
He said the chamber will not stop crying till the building
of second Niger bridge commences, because without the project, the entire life
and economic activities of the people in Eastern part of the country are
hanging on the balance as the existing bridge can collapse sooner than
envisaged.
